IDENTIFIED Chilean Navy,
Administration Officer, not a flight qualification badge. Pilots
are marked by the star at the centre. Red=Army, Blue=Navy,
Green=Police. Identification from "Wings and Things" Vol
2, #3, page 27, summer 1988. Note: there are many Chilean badges
which are effectively "branch of service" badges, the
central device of the "wing" indicating the discipline,
the colour indicating service

IDENTIFIED United States Navy
Aviation Aerographer's Mate rate. "The Aerographer was in
charge of meteorological readings as it related to aviation. The
fact that it is cut out like this could have meant it was a rate
for a non-PO man who simply had it sewn on at the sleeve. Or it
was cut out of a PO rate. Either way, it is bullion and exactly
the same as the one I had which dated from about the 60's
(although the rate was in use in WWII)." Identified by Tod
Rathbone of Rathbone Museum

Cryllic text stamp - - - Known to be Bulgarian,
issued through 1930's and 1940's and commonly seen on air force
uniforms but purpose and use unknown. It is NOT the Air Force
Branch of Service badge and it is NOT the Bulgarian pilot badge of
that era. It is most commonly seen on officer graduation
photographs and may relate to that. The badge is most commonly
found appearing silver coloured, but originally was washed in gold
which quickly deteriorated. Proper ID needed

IDENTIFIED Some examples of this
badge have been seen with the French jeweller FIX name attached.
While these badges do not conform to the authorised pattern for a
military pilot, it is possible that Bijou FIX created some badges
to be worn as sweethearts. I believe this badge should be seen as
a sweetheart badge rather than a variant of an authorised badge.

April 18th 2003 Chris Langley triple clutch - -
- - IDENTIFIED. in the
1960-70 era, the CIA Air America, operating out of Thailand , took
civilian trained pilots and taught them specifically on gliders.
The gliders were towed to within reasonable distance of a place
where something needed to be delivered in total silence and at
night.....these gliders (freight, not passenger) would then lose
their load over the target in the silence and darkness of night
and then head back to a pickup zone at some safe distance. I do
not know if the gliders were recovered or anything like that. The
whole operation was very clandestine and there were only a small
handful of these pilots at any one time........this wing is the
one they wore on their flying suits........there were two pilots
on each glider, senior and junior......the star above representing
the senior man. Information provided by Paul Souza.

silk screened onto stiffened canvas. "Sew marks" are
obvious. This badge is visibly and obviously appropriately old,
yet no reference to it can be found. If anyone has seen these
before or has any information relating to them, please let us
know. A similar silk screened Austalian off-pattern wing (without
crown) will be uploaded shortly.
