Newly Independent Nation

The Armenian Air Force was formed in 1990 with the break-up of the former Soviet Union and the newfound independence of Armenia. As in other states newly independent of the former Soviet state, the initial equipment was that which was found in-situ in Armenia at the point of collapse of the central administration.

for much of the time since its independence, Armenia has been locked in a struggle with its neighbour, Azerbaijan, equipment has been poor and in limited supply. A new defence pact with Russia may bring about changes.

Although operational effectiveness is believed to be poor, the following inventory appears to be in service:
13 Mig 29, 5 Su-25, 2 L-39. Helicopters include 12 Mil 24P, 7 Mi-8MT transports, 2 Mi-9 command helicopters and 2 utility Mi-2's. Fixed wing transport is provided by 1 An24 and 1 An32. Training uses 6 An-2, 10 Yak-52 and 6 Yak 55/18T.
