Georgian Air Force

On the break up of the Soviet nion The Georgian Air Force was formed in 1991, using aircraft stationed in the country and those of its Citizens serving in what had been the Soviet Air Forces. Compared to many other former Soviet Republics, Georgia has the advantage that the Su-25 was manufactured in the country, avoiding the problems that have affected many post-Soviet air forces. Nevertheless, economic problems are affecting serviceabiloity. Five Su-17 are non-operational. Up to 50 Su-39, developments of the Su-25, are supposed to have been ordered for delivery up to 2007. The GAF's operational aircraft include 7 Su-25/K/UB strike aircraft, including a conversion trainer, and 3 Mi-24 attack helicopters. Six An-2, ten UH-1's, a gift from the USA, a Mi-2 and 4 Mi-8/17 heliucopters provide transport. There is a Tu-134 VIP transport. Training uses 4 l-29 Delfin and 4 Yak-52/Yak-18 with 10 L-39 decommissioned.
